Hit Location + Called Shots Oracle
So during a game I realised I lack a way to determine fairly and easily where a foe will try hitting a PC whenever it's not obvious. Will they go for the torso? Maybe they'll try crushing their head? Or maybe disarm them? I was tired of defaulting to body shots, so I decided it was time to add a new column to my Oracle Table.
So I went over deciding what 6 Hit Locations I was going to add to my table, and ranked them by how likely it is they're going to be the target of someone during a fight:
- The torso. Easy to hit and a well placed shot can end the battle.
- The head. It's not so easy to hit, but there's a big chance of ending the fight.
- The arms. While they flail around, making a shot easy to dodge, there's quite a few interesting things that one can accomplish by hitting here: disarming, imobilizing or disabling the arm, etc.
- The legs. They're kind of easy, but also as many interesting stuff can happen when you hit them. I don't want many fights to revolve around getting PCs down, so I put this down the list.
- The hands (mostly the main hand). Harder to hit than arms, but also fun.
- The eyes. Again, harder to hit than the head but has some interesting implications as well.
I then added some markings to remind me of what cool stuff foes can do when hitting those places and to have freebies, and suddenly realised that I could just use that column to adjucate called shots from the PCs.
Here's the table:
2d6 | Hit Location | Oracle |
2, 3 | Eyes | No, and |
4, 5 | Head | No |
6 | Legs | No, but |
7 | Arms | Yes, but |
8, 9, 10 | Torso | Yes |
11, 12 | Hands | Yes, and |
I was already using 2d6 rolls on the Oracle column to find when they hit, so when it comes to called shots I can instead look if the result on the dice matches the hit location they're going for.
Let's say Ana says she wants to pull her foe's leg to make him fall. We roll 2d6 and if a 6 comes up, that happens. Effects like "enemy falls", "they are disarmed", etc, was the stuff I was already planning on adding for the "Yes, and" results, but this makes it so the result they're looking for happens with a higher chance, at the cost of a higher likelihood of missing. It's risk vs reward.
Now, a few of you might have caught a problem with this idea: both the Eyes and Hands hit locations have the same probability of a "Yes, and". So asking for a called shot for those at first carries only risk, but brings no reward. One workaround for that is having a fallback of something else happening if they happen to roll results for the Head (in case of a called shot to the Eyes) or Arms (for Hands). Another possibility is to increase the reward of hitting, for example: "Not only do you blind your opponent, but they also blindly trip and fall, becoming even more vulnerable".
The other thing is you can use the Eyes result for any other very specific location they're trying to hit, like a previous wound, a single fell scale, or even the heart. Just make sure to adjust the fallback you're using.
